Video computer games have become as much a pillar of our entertainment universe as books and movies. Why is it that so many of us are drawn to the computer monitor or TV screen like flies? A bit of history might help explain the phenomenon.

Originally computers were all work and no play, being outrageously expensive to build and operate. But computer engineers and designers, being overgrown kids after all, soon began to get comfortable with their big room-filling machines. In their idle hours it occured to them that it might be kind of cool to have the computer show some spaceships and planets cruising around the galaxy. And in the 1960s a group of fun-loving computer geniuses created SpaceWar, the father of the famous arcade game Astroids.

These games were well received by geniuses and regular folks alike, which motivated the geniuses to design some more fun stuff. They could have used the computers for a lot of diversions, but somehow the visual element of the games activated the imagination. Over time we got Pong, PacMan and a continually evolving string of games, including software that eventually could beat chess masters at their own game.

By the late 1980s computer games software was getting quite sophisticated, with the invention of Sim City. This product expanded on what was going on through all the previous games; the players were being drawn into an imaginary world. Not unlike books and movies, these video games were very satisfying mentally. Sim City actually allowed the user to create amazing cities and even worlds.

Also in the 1980s, a group of computer programmers began creating software that would show moving images all generated by computer. The images started out very simple, almost like stick figures but they could dance in time to a music track. No skin, no facial features but it was very exciting to think what might come with more powerful computers. The computing power grew exponentially and, over 20 years, we now have not only some fabulous computer generated movie effects and whole characters, but the realism of video games has taken a quantum leap forward.

A good video game will draw you in to another world and, unlike a book or movie, a computer game will offer an interactive experience. In fact, at least one computer game has become sufficiently popular to become an action movie; think Mario Brothers. But it’s funny that sometimes a simple game can be as entertaining as a much more sophisticated game. Some of the most beloved games of all are Tetris (stack those blocks), Pac Man and Pong.

A modern computer will still do a great job of playing state-of-the-art video games. There are hundreds of options, including many that pit you online against other players. Then there are the specialty consoles like PlayStation, Nintendo and XBox360. With tricked-out controllers, guitars and wands, you can really develop some hand-eye coordination by playing many of the current titles.

One of the most fun educational games is Roller Coaster Tycoon, where you build your own amusement park and then operate it with “real” guests making decisions about which rides to take. If a guest loses their lunch on a roller coaster you’d better have a custodian clean it up or the guests will stay away. You must watch income and expenses and save money to build more attractions. This is a great game.

But the bottom line as to why we’re so enamored with computer games software is that it captures our imagination in a variety of interactive ways. Our games are prized possessions and it is wise to treat them carefully to make them last.

Spiderman 2
My Rating: 7/10

For those people who were excited about the Spider-Man 2 movie, hold on to the excitement for the release of Spider-Man 2 the video game. The story of the game is based on the film. Of course you’re the man in red, you get to run around the city fighting your basic low life criminals. Peter Parker, an intelligent student in high school, who was bitten by a radioactive spider. Peter quickly discovers that he is stronger and has super reflexes. Peter/Spider-Man takes to the town fighting crime and finding his way to save the day.
The graphics for this game are pretty good. All of the these kinds of video games have basically the same graphic design. I don’t think there is much you can change with the idea. Super hero runs around the town, from street to street looking for crime, and people that are in need of help. Good guy beat up the bad guys, end of story.
The controls for the game are of course the same as the other games. Punch, kick, jump, swing, and of course you can never forget the webs. One of the cool things that you can do in this game is climb to the tallest building, jump off that super high building and web swing at the last second to save yourself from the certain death you would have if you didn’t have those super powers.
The game play has some pros and some cons. The bad thing is that the cons over does the pros. So wow great graphics and neat I can do this and that. One of the games cons of course the repeat of basic ideas. They give you five versions of the bad guys to fight and three colors of outfits for them. It might not seem like a big thing but try playing the game for a weeks and then see if it bothers you much.
My over all view of the game is average. Cool idea for the movie and sure ok idea for a rip off for the game. But I suggest to rent that game or borrow it from someone. Chances are you’ll be bored to death with it.

If you are an owner of the Nintendo Wii, then you might be thinking what are some games that I must have for it? You probably want some games that will keep you entertained and will never get boring. Finding great Nintendo Wii games might be hard if you do not know which ones are the must have games. The following is a list of five must have Wii games.

Super Mario Galaxy 2: The first Super Mario Galaxy was great, but the sequel to it is even better. This game has gotten perfect scores by many reviewers and has often been cited as the best Super Mario ever. This game is a must have platformer for any Nintendo Wii owner.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl: This is quite possibly the best fighter on any video game console. This game includes characters from many popular Nintendo games and lets you brawl it out against each other. You can use or not use items against each other. The game features many characters, unlockables, items, and maps to play on. This is definitely a fighting game that every Nintendo Wii owner should have.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: When it comes to every generation of Nintendo consoles, you should buy Legend of Zelda. These games are great adventure, role-playing games that everyone loves. Although this one was technically first on the GameCube, it plays even better on the Nintendo Wii by utilizing the motion controls.

Mario Kart Wii: When motion controls were introduced, it was obvious that racing games will be awesome. This game is awesome because it also includes a wheel to use with your Wii controller. Just tilt the wheel and your kart turns in the game. This makes racing games even more fun.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption: Metroid Prime 3 is probably the best first person shooter on the Nintendo Wii. In addition to being a first person shooter, it is also an adventure game that lets you explore vast worlds. It might be wise to play the other Metroid Prime games before embarking on this one.

If you own a Nintendo Wii, then there are five games that you should have in your video game collection. These games are Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Mario Kart Wii, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. These games are all classics and will bring you lots of fun.

Killzone is a series of games developed for the Playstation consoles by Guerrilla Games. First launched on November 2nd, 2004 on the Playstation 2, Killzone is a first person shooter set far in the future, in a time where space colonization has begun.

In the game, the player is a captain of the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance (ISA), which is waging war against the Helghast Empire. The Helgast are a race of mutated humans who settled the planet of Helghast over a millennium ago. The mutations that they endured while on the planet have made them stronger and faster than their normal human counterparts, and an earlier betrayal by the UCN have given the Helghast a grudge they’ve carried for years.

At the start of the game, the player is is defending the planet of Vekta against a Helghast army. Despite heroic efforts however, the Helghast army eventually overruns the defenses and the ISA is forced to retreat from the base. The planetary headquarters are evacuated, and the player, playing as Jan Templar, is sent to recover information from an undercover ISA operative. On they way, they discover that General Stuart Adams is working for the Helghast. The traitor general kills one of the lead ISA officers, and begins sabotaging Earth Defense fleet SD platforms. Fortunately, Templar and his ex-lover Lugar manage to subvert his activities, eventually resulting in the ISA retaking the planet.

Killzone received mixed reviews from critics. Although most reviews were positive, the game was criticized for some technical issues, including game glitches and problems with the AI. Although the graphical experience was labeled as one of the best of the generation, the gameplay itself was rated much lower; IGN in particular called the experience “underwhelming”.

Killzone 2, developed for the new Playstation 3, received rave reviews. The game was praised for it’s wonderfully complete graphics, comprehensive multiplayer mode, and great action. In the sequel, the ISA has recovered from the initial Helghast assault and has launched a counter-offensive against Helgan, the Helghast home planet. This time, the player takes on the role of Tomas Sevchenko, leading forces behind enemy lines deep in the planet. However, the team quickly discovers that the Helghast are able to manipulate the weather and lightning storms on their planet, and are much more formidable on their home planet.

Killzone 3 is slated to be released in February 2011, and is rumored to pick up at the end of Killzone 2, when the Helghast has launched a massive counterattack that destroyed the ISA fleet. The game will only be available on the PS3.

Ruins of War is the latest RYL remake to hit the scene, a European RYL remake. But how does this mmorpg match up against some of the others available? The
Ruins of War impression is certainly a great one.

Ruins of War is one of the latest RYL games released, as I said. So with that, it also has their strong points and weak points built into it. This game is an amazing pvp game, which is what most mmorpgs aim to be when the user reaches their end game time. The pvp is very fast pace and intense, often allowing those who have great equips from boss hunting to be able to one hit kill three or four players at a time. Every character has their strong points and weak points, so this game is very balanced, at times, players will complain about every class being over powered, and when every class is claimed to be over powered, you clearly have a balanced mmorpg there.

After you get to the third map, the two nations will be forced to fight each other. So every time you see a member of the opposite nation, unless you are in peace mode through the acquisition of a special item, you will see them as a threat and you will have to fight in order to survive. At times, you will see parties of humans and ak’kans fighting each other for rights to level in a spot. This is what can make this game so exciting.

There are many quests available for users to do, which makes the game quite easy to get through. There are enough quests so that you will have an easy time getting to level 60 if you are struggling to find a party. However, when it comes to it, after you do most of your quests, you will be thrown into monotonous grind in your leveling. The max level is supposedly 90, so if you can reach that level, you may not have a problem after that. But until then, you may find leveling quite enjoyable.

If you are an mmorpg enthusiast who enjoys quests, pvp and great player versus npc content, then Ruins of War is definitely a great game to play. There is nation wars, guild wars, wars when trying to level, it is just constant excitement. I recommend getting Ruins of War, to at least try it.

In the “old” days you plugged your joystick into the Atari or Nintendo and entertained yourself for hours with your favorite video game. The game system itself was your only opponent, and you were lucky if the game gave you the option to play with two players. Nowadays, you can sit comfortably on your couch and use a wireless controller to play your game on a TV that is across the room from you while the game console is in another part of the room. You can also play the same game with multiple players from around the world in real-time and talk to them at the same time! Advances in software and hardware technology have taken video games to an exciting new level, and the widespread use of broadband internet service has made it possible to share the gaming experience with others while also introducing new options such as downloading movies and music. There are many components that make up the world of wireless gaming and this phenomenon has changed the way gaming systems are designed and played.

More Advanced Gaming Systems

The video game consoles that we play today are much more efficient and faster than the systems that were available twenty years ago. The original Nintendo and Sega Genesis systems that were released in 1985 and 1989, respectively, came with wired controllers that had a directional pad and a total of four buttons. The Xbox and Playstation 3 systems that are popular today come with a choice of wired or wireless controllers that have over ten buttons each. These new controllers are designed to give the consumer maximum playability with different types of games. Both systems also contain hard drives and USB ports that can store content and give them most of the functionality of a personal computer. Nintendo’s Wii Fit even has an interactive touchpad that can sense a player’s movements in different directions.

Broadband Internet Access

Back when the Atari and other systems of the 1980′s were widespread, you would have given someone a good laugh if you called and told them that you wanted to play against them online. Today, that person would probably respond and ask you, “Which game do you want to play?” Software and hardware technology has made it easy for gamers to challenge and play along with other players from all parts of the globe. This would not be possible without the existence of the internet. Broadband service providers such as AT&T and wireless companies have made access to the world wide web available, and this has created a new virtual world for game players. Popular titles such as the Halo series and EA Sports games have produced graphical interfaces in which you can play the game with others through a portal that can be accessed by all players who are playing the same game. Headsets and cameras also make audio and visual communications between gamers possible.

So, if you want to escape reality for a little while then you can throw on a headset, grab a controller and take a trip into the world of wireless gaming!

Loading a Game Doctor Game

To operate a Game Doctor, first connect the Game Doctor into the Famicom’s cartridge slot. Next, connect the RAM Adapter to the top of GD, the RAM Adapter cable into the back of the FDS, and connect a power supply to the GD, Famicom, and FDS. When you turn on the Famicom you will see the normal FDS disk prompt. To “activate” the Game Doctor, you must insert a disk in a particular format which contains a hacked “ROM”, only then will you see something outside of the normal FDS loading screen. If the GD game you load is multiple sided (game is over 64k), you will be prompted to insert the next side once a side has finished loading into the Game Doctor’s memory. This is the only user interface that you will see.

The video below shows what you’ll see on the TV as you load a GD formatted game with your Famicom Disk System and GD. The on-screen prompts tell you when to load the next disk side or if an error has occurred while loading a disk. Once all disk sides have been loaded, the game will start without showing the Nintendo Copyright screen. The game in this video is 2 full disks, sides A through D, and is called D.J. Boy, a title hack of Rollergames for the NES.

Famicom Game Doctor Formats

Famicom Disk System copiers have only 2 components:

  1. the BIOS which intercepts FDS data flow and reroutes it to Game Doctor memory and starts the game; and
  2. the hardware which is basically ONE multiple-state mapper which can play (C)NROM, U(N/O)ROM GNROM and two custom “mappers”

GD disk formats include the base GD format. It also includes upgrades by FFE and Venus, which are upwardly compatible with later units:

  • GD 1M/2M format (supported by ALL units)
  • GD 2M hacked images (supported by some GD2M, mostly compatible with GD4M, GM, TGD4, TGD6)
  • GD 4M hacked images (supported by GD4M, mostly compatible with GM, TGD4, TGD6)
  • Magic Card 2M hacked images (supported by MC2M, MC4M)
  • Magic Card 4M hacked images (supported by MC4M) – few hacks exist
  • Turbo GD 4+ hacked images (supported by TGD4) – few hacks exist
  • Turbo GD 6+ hacked images (supported by TGD6)

The only disks that are NOT compatible with other copier units are Front FarEast (FFE) format Magic Card disks. However, some Magic Card disks will work in GD because they’re in the basic GD format, while others won’t because they’re protected. Most hacked Game Doctor games won’t work in Magic Card copiers because the BIOS actively rejects them, displaying an error message, such as “CAN’T USE!!” The games that will work are usually SNROM hacks (a MMC1 configuration) because the games fit well into UOROM, a discrete mapper playable on any copier.

The different types of game doctor/copiers are:

Format

Xbox 360, PC

Style

Third person RPG/RTS

Modes

Single player campaign only

Pros

Stunning graphics, epic storyline, engrossing gameplay, top-notch voice acting, good combat, great fun.

Cons

Hair-pulling difficulty at some points.

Introduction

Baldur’s Gate, Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. A company that puts all of its heart and soul into its games, and the outcome is more than worth it. Dragon Age: Origins is a platinum medal among gold. With an expanse of RPGs in this past decade, it’s difficult to narrow it down to the best. But what most players agree with is that DA:O is one of the top RPGs this decade, if not the top.

The Start Up

Like any RPG, you get the character selection/customization. I first tried making a Dalish Elf, These are the elves that have stayed in the isolated forests, hiding away from the humankind. It started out with a nice intro to the story line and to the Dalish Elves. After the video I immediately was thrown into decisions, whether or not to kill a few humans wandering through our woods. Of course I had to let them go, I know how humans are. They also tipped me off about some ruins that I ventured into with an elvish friend and delved right into an easy, short intro to combat. The easy switch between the zoomed out, over head zoom and the up close “adventure” camera view with the scroll wheel makes the switch between combat and walking very fluid. The first part of the game is very forgiving and eases you into the style which I was not used to. It’s like a cross between RTS and classic Third Person, packed with lore and action and quests. The cut-scenes are absolutely gorgeous, and the voice acting is top-notch.
My second character I made was the generic, Human Noble. I generally don’t like melee fighting in RPGs but I decided to push this game to its limits. This proved to be a great choice. Even the very last thing I ever wanted to be was a lot of fun. You start off with the choice of having your dog as a companion, and I don’t know how you could pass up a chance like that. During gameplay, you may only have 4 companions out at a time, so you’re generally fighting in a team. I decided to be a tank (defensive character) to help hold enemies and take the blunt of the damage. The combat and tactics were pretty easy to get used to, but the gameplay is incredibly difficult.

Graphics

While playing on maxed out graphics with a new GPU from the Radeon 5800 series, it’s an incredibly beautiful game. The faces are the best I’ve seen, the armor and weapons are incredibly detailed, and the environment is gorgeous to look at. Lighting and shading are at a perfect balance, each light has a nice glow and the darkness is greatly contrasted. Even the fire alone is just about the best fire I’ve seen in a game this far. It has this warm, comforting glow, with a strong lick and… well, it’s really nice looking fire. The detail in the game is unbelievable, after fighting, your characters are covered in blood specs, as opposed to the usual clean heroes in most games. People will notice eventually that each place, each forest, each dungeon and cave they go through is detailed and extravagant, along with it’s contents and enemies. The game is top quality for DirectX10 and only DX11 can beat it. It was a smart move using DX10 though, as not everyone has a DX11 GPU (recently released). Basically, the game is absolutely pristine.

Gameplay

This is one of the hardest and most frustrating games I have ever played, except for Street Fighter and Mega Man 9. The difficulty can be summed up as such: On the second quest, I had four characters, full health and was ready to fight. There were just two enemies waiting by a bridge over the swampy waters of the Wild. I figured “hey, easy enough, just tank ‘em and spank ‘em.” But no, I was mistaken, those two led us through bear traps and a multitude of more enemies. They overtook us time after time after time. It must have taken five tries to get by them finally. Within the first half hour of the game! On normal difficulty! It’s a great challenge. One feature that really took some time to get used to was the tactics. This bundle of menus determines what your character does when a certain event happens, such as if you character’s health is below 20% they will use a special block move. This really comes in handy for big fights where you can’t really keep track of everything every second.
Besides the occasional, jaw-gnashing difficult parts, the game is pretty straight forward and simple. Completing quests, continuing the storyline, gaining levels and skills, improving armor and weapons, it’s your no-surprises RPG. But what you don’t always come to see is the fantastic, unique, engrossing storyline. This rich tale sticks out in the RPG world because it’s so original and detailed. The Blight (a bunch of ugly, gray-ish guys) come around and try to kill everyone every couple of hundred years. They were old Magi that tried to take the heavens, but were defeated and cursed. There is an arch-demon that leads the blight and he must be defeated to end it. The Grey Wardens are a group of fighters that work to defeat the Blight with the help of the people, and you become one of these last Grey Wardens. You must work with three other fighters/adventurers (whomever you pick up) to delve further into the world with quests and objectives and fights. And yes, much like Mass Effect, there is a sex scene involved, it probably won’t be in the news quite as much because there’s no aliens involved. But anyways, the gameplay is fantastic, easy to get into, incredibly challenging and fun, and the storyline is great.
Each time you start a new character, you’re thrown into a completely different starting are with different choices and quests. As you progress, you choose your path depending on what you decide to do, so you could play through the game twice in two totally different ways. The replayability is staggering, because not many other games give you this much decision. The fact that it is solely one player doesn’t hinder the experience at all, and in my opinion is a better route to go, it would just feel weird playing with other people. Compared to other RPGs, Dragon Age: Origins is a gem; it has taken everything we love about RPGs and perfected it. BioWare knows how to make a great game, and I look forward to any sequels of this fantastic game.

The plot behind Devil’s Tuning Fork is straightforward and somehow underdeveloped, but it gets the job done. Children around the world are falling into comas without a clear cause and only one child has the ability to explore his awkward state and eventually save himself and other kids in the process. From the first minute of gameplay you plunge into a dark world where all lights went out and navigate through the threatening corridors by generating sound waves.

The ratio between the time spent playing Devil’s Tuning Fork and the satisfaction generated, surpassed by far most of nowadays blockbusters. Its best asset is the great deal of innovation it brings up in the gaming industry and the brilliant way the concept was developed. The complete absence of light is what makes this title truly special, as the absolute darkness generates a claustrophobic atmosphere few PC games ever produced.

For a game that is played in complete obscurity, the brief moments when your tuning fork reveals the environment are delightful. The sound waves gradually advance, so while the distant zones are exposed, dark is once again creeping around you. It’s hard to point out one remarkable feature, in terms of visual effects, but it’s only fair to say that the full package and the overwhelming atmosphere generated are amazing.

For obvious reasons, sound is the cornerstone of Devil’s Tuning Fork, but besides the waves emitted by yourself to shed light over the surroundings, there are other elements to be taken into account. Faint whispers are engulfing you when you approach the trapped children and sometimes it is even possible to hear the voices of your concerned parents, or the doctors struggling to find a cure. There is a more sinister presence in this dark world, and his menacing words are aimed to unsettle the player even further.
